Ray Paul

Music Producer

Ray has been involved in the music industry for over 20 years, having begun in BBC Local Radio in London and progressing through the ranks.

In 2001  Ray was part of the launch team, (BBC) who had been given the task of setting up one of the Corporation’s new Digital radio stations. The station was BBC 1Xtra, and was aimed at fans of black music. The new network was revolutionary and Ray’s role included developing the editorial proposition and programming of the station, as well as recruiting 30 DJ’s and presenters. In addition to this he also played a crucial role in shortlisting and recruiting production staff from around the UK.

After 8 years at 1Xtra, he  moved on to become head of weekend programming at BBC Radio 1, which involved managing and developing marquee radio shows including The Official Chart Show, Vernon Kay, Edith Bowman Breakfast Show and The Radio 1 Request Show.

In May 2010 Ray headed up the on-air execution of Radio 1′s Big Weekend in Bangor. This is Europe’s largest free ticketed festival, and his role was to oversee the entire on air coverage for Radio 1, as well as liaising with all record labels and external broadcasting departments and overseeing the co-ordination of artist appearances and broadcast throughout the Corporation.

Ray will be the lead creative programmer for Punch. From February he will be bringing an unequalled understanding of Black music and audiences to launch a new, UK-wide music and touring programme. Ray Paul begins his tenure with a major tour ‘Jamaica Party’ exploring the deep and enduring influence of Jamaican music,  featuring high profile artists including; Mala, Channel One and Top Cat.
