Music is my Heritage
Music is my Heritage is a young person led project that explores how music and its heritage has positively influenced the area they live in. The project will culminate in an audio book that will document the area’s musical history in a contemporary, approachable and lively medium.
Professional musicians and artists will work with two youth centres in NW Birmingham to build a multi-media disc that documents the musical landscape of their city.
North West Birmingham has a fantastically rich heritage of music from the early movement of Reggae and Bhangra through to modern day grime and hip hop and newly built genres of Black music.
This project is an opportunity for the young people living in the area to document these musical journeys, to meet local champions and put the area where they live into a positive spotlight. The participants will also grow in confidence through working as a team, develop new skills and learn about different genres of music. They will also build up knowledge of a city they thought they knew – the Champions will take the groups on journeys around the city, visiting old nightclubs, old venues and shops that were instrumental in building the musical profile of the city.
Two groups of young people will work on a project to document the musical history of our city through working with local Champions in the following genres:
- Hip Hop
- Bhangra/ Asian music
- Grime
- Reggae
- Dance and Soul
A group of 9 young people from the Lozells Recreation Group recently completed the Music is my Heritage project where they also all achieved their Bronze Arts Award. For more information and to check out some footage and pictures, click here.
