Vieux Farka Toure is one of the greatest guitarists to have emerged from Africa

Thursday 9th February 2012
Doors 9pm

Hare & Hounds, 106 High St, Kings Heath, Birmingham

Tickets £10 advance (more on the door)

Vieux Farka Toure is one of the most hotly tipped guitarists to have emerged from Africa. Rooted in the bluesy style of Saharan Africa, he has updated the roots rhythms, mixing traditions of his native Mali with technology, winning plaudits on the way.

The son of the Grammy award winning desert blues guitarist Ali Farka Toure, Vieux Farka Toure’s path to success was far from straight forward. Initially his father tried hard to discourage him and Vieux Farka Toure hid his desire to play, joining music groups as though they were secret societies. Eventually he gained the blessing (and musical contribution) from Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate on his debut album. Two years later his second album Fondo launched him on the international stage and the following year saw him perform at the opening concert for the 2010 world cup alongside Alicia Keys and Shakira. 2011 sees the release of his third studio album The Secret, which topped the US world music charts over the summer and a UK tour.

Visiting Birmingham for the first time, VFT will be showcasing material from his new disc at Hare and Hounds Kings Heath.

“an essential sound track to modern, urban Africa” – MOJO.

Kane FM present a documentry of the concept and people behind the amazing DUB to JUNGLE Tour

Kane FM have wonderfully documented and captured the Punch Records and Vagabondz presented DUB TO JUNGLE tour May 2011; the film explores the living history of bass culture with interviews with Channel One Sound System, Congo Natty, Tenor Fly, Klose One, Nanci & Phoebe. We also speak with the stakeholder and Director of Punch Records Ammo Talwar and promoters about the concept behind the tour.

Roots reggae has been cited by many music critics of the 20th century as the mother of many modern music forms. Born from the garrisons of Jamaica this music has given a voice to disaffected peoples of all cultures and all backgrounds around the world. The messages of rebellion and truth seeking that roots provides struck a chord across the globe.

In the 1990′s artists like Ragga Twins, Rebel Mc & Lennie De Ice began to fuse roots reggae with acid house. Jungle techno, or as it was first called, 4beat, was born. Jungle is the child of reggae, conceived by the union of Jamaican sound system culture and British acid house music.

Director / Interviews — Chris Jones / Producer — Nick Hayman@ Burningwick / Elliot Seeds @ Motion Graphics / Sound Man — Alpesh Patel / Camera — Squeaky Clean, Sophie Akehurst, Ben Cornish.
